Unmalted grains are collectively known as adjuncts. They are used for various reasons, e.g. colour, head retention, flavour etc. As unmalted grains have no diastatic enzymes they have to be mashed with pale or lager malt.

OAT HUSKS To improve the filter bed of the mash to decrease the likelyhood of a stuck mash Non fermentable, but they can be useful in the mash. The hulls provide bulk and help prevent the mash from settling and becoming stuck during the sparge. This can be very helpful when making wheat or rye beers with a low percentage of barley malt and barley husks. Rinse well before use. Recommended usage - up to 5% of the grain bill.
